GAFCON 2018 Conference to take place in Jerusalem

The Chairman and fellow Primates of the GAFCON Council are pleased to announce that the third GAFCON conference will be held in Jerusalem in 2018.

Jerusalem has a special place in the hearts of the GAFCON movement as it was the location of the first conference in 2008. Moreover, Jerusalem stands as a constant reminder of the birth of the Gospel and the movement’s determination to remain true to the teachings of our Lord and his Holy Word.

GAFCON was greatly blessed by both the initial conference and the second meeting in Nairobi in 2013. When Anglicans from across the Communion come together in unity it is a tremendous blessing, and we are excited to see the Church built up in the land where it was given its foundation.

Dates and further details will be announced in due course.

How fascinating. The Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem has a particularly close relationship to the Episcopal Church. On the other hand the Diocese of Egypt is an important part of GAFCON. I think it’s fair to say that the relationship between the two dioceses is not especially close (let the reader understand).

However – Christchurch Jerusalem is the oldest Protestant church in the Middle East. It’s an evangelical GAFCON supporting congregation, formally part of the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem, but older than the diocese, with historic ties to CMJ and a particular mission to the Jewish people. I wonder if the GAFCON meeting is occurring at Christchurch?

I cannot imagine that Bishop Suheil will be filled with joy at GAFCON meeting in his diocese. I wonder if TEC may apply some pressure to make sure, say, the resources of the Diocese – such as St. George’s Cathedral or College – are not available to be enjoyed by GAFCON.

    Interesting times ahead, I suspect.
